April Meeting Cancelled…

I dropped the ball.

I dropped the ball.

Hey everyone,
I had a busy last week with Easter and forgot to send a reminder email about tonight’s meeting. That coupled with a few other issues has forced me to cancel for tonight.

My apologies.

However, in May we will be wrapping up our technical series. I want to do some exercises with our flashes and try some light painting. Should be a good time. Also, we need to start thinking of our next outing down on the strip. I’m going to try and post some inspirational shots of the strip over the next couple of weeks as I’ve seen some really nice art about that recently.

Hope everyone had a great Easter! Thanks,
Shad

Night Photography…

Hey everyone,
In our last meeting we went out and took some photos of campus at night to try and figure out how to meter. I think our next outing is going to be at the strip and we’ll do some night shooting then as well. I wanted to show you this site and some of the images this guy takes. His name is Larrie Thompson and he shoots a lot of stuff in the SW deserts. He paints with light, which we talked about and everyone should try it once. Pretty fun stuff.

Outing This Saturday

Hey everyone,
We will be going to Valley of Fire this Saturday, March 28. We’ll leave the church around 9am and try to get back around 3 or 3:30pm before the start of the 4pm service. It takes about 1 hour to get there, so we should have a good 4 to 5 hours at the park.

A couple of things to note ::
• We’ll be taking the church van which seats 9, if we have more we may need to ask around the group to see who can supply an extra vehicle.
• The cost for the trip is $6 for one vehicle admittance to the park, and $20 to fill the van back up with gas. So we need to divide this up amongst us that goes as our budget got zapped in the reductions. If someone needs to bring an extra vehicle we’ll work out compensation amongst the group for gas and park admittance.
• I’m going to bring my 3 and half year old. If you all want to bring an older child (one that can walk trails) that is fine. I’m going to pay for her in whatever the cost comes out to be. I’m going to try and help you all with any questions and guiding us through the park so I won’t be taking photos.
• Everyone needs to bring a lunch, I’m going to try and get a cooler with ice to put water bottles in. We can put other drinks in as well if you want to bring something. Also, bring any kind of sun protection, it may not be hot but you’ll get burned if you are standing out in the sun to long.
Let me know by Thursday if you can come or not. I need a head count just for vehicles.

Comment below if you can come or email me at sfox@canyonridge.org

Thanks guys,
Shad

March meeting…

Hey everyone,
Just a reminder. Our next meeting is March 10 at 7pm in the Communications office. Sorry for not updating the blog in the last couple of weeks. I’m coming close to landing on an outing date. I’ll let you know about that before our meeting. Bring your cameras as we’ll be hitting up metering and what apeture, shutter, speed and ISO do. We’ll be taking test shots, and those of you who don’t have an SLR I’ll share the church camera with you. Should be fun.

Thanks,
Shad

February meeting…

We are meeting again on Tuesday, February 10. Like always we will start at 7pm in the communications office. If you have your camera bring it as we will be starting our technical series on photo fundamentals. I’ll make a small outline of our discussion for that night.

On a side note I have to apologize for not getting the outing going before this meeting. I have a date in mind now and I’m going to try and get it set. So look for a date on that soon.

Thanks,
Shad

More inspiration…

I just came across this today. Thought some of you all would appreciate this style. I know this kind of photography doesn’t really have a whole lot of practicle application for our ministry, but I think it is very inspiring. I’d love to shoot (no pun intended) something like this myself just to see if I could pull it off. Very impressive stuff. I really like the flowers with the exploding vases. Something about beauty with the destruction and chaos below each flower.

See it here!

Thanks…

Lorisha and Bob, thanks for taking on Saturday for Baby Dedication. the photos were great. Youth ministries were really impressed with the results. Good job!

Outing…

In our last meeting we talked about joining the Las Vegas photographers meet up group for our outing. They are going down on the strip this Sunday January 25. I personally can’t make this trip as I have a prior commitment. I would encourage any of you to go, they look like they may have about 30 people going so far.

I still want to do an outing as a group however, but my schedule of the next couple of weekends is occupied. I wouldn’t try to do anything next weekend as it is Super Bowl weekend. The next Sunday after (Feb 8) won’t work for me either as I have a staff meeting at the church. I’ll set something up soon, but it will probably rest on a weekday instead of a weekend.

Thanks,
Shad

Technical Series…

Hey everyone,
I want to spend our next four meetings discussing some basic photography principles. I know it may seem really basic to some, but I think it is important for everyone to know fundamentals. A lot of you have asked for this as well. We’ll spend about half our meeting on this and it will be kind of like a series. Here’s how I see it breaking down…

February 10 – Basic Camera Operation (camera functions, and how it records images)
March 10 – Defining Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, and White Balance.

April 14 – Taking photos in Manuel Mode, metering, etc…
May 12 – Situational Photography, how to shoot in the dark, bright, low light, etc…

Bring your cameras to the next 4 meetings. We’ll try some things out, should be fun. Don’t sweat it if all you have is a point and shoot, these things everyone should know, and will help you figure out your camera needs in the future.

Baby Dedication…

The photo doesnt need to be this good, you know what we need.

The photo doesn't need to be this good, you know what we need.

Hey everyone,
We need 4 photographers for this weekend to take photos of families for Baby dedication. The commitment is 45 minutes prior to service. Email me if you think you can do it. sfox@canyonridge.org

Thanks,
Shad
